Did you know that you can bring your positive airway pressure (CPAP) device wherever you travel?
Since your CPAP is considered medical equipment, you can bring it into the cabin in addition to your personal carry-on luggage.
Airport security staff are now familiar with these types of devices, but to avoid any unpleasant situations, it is recommended that you carry a copy of your prescription and a letter confirming your medical treatment. You can obtain this attestation letter from the clinic where you purchased your device.
How can I ensure my CPAP works while traveling?
Power Outlet Compatibility
Most CPAP devices are equipped with a converter that adapts to different countries’ electrical currents (110-220 volts). To confirm this, contact your healthcare provider for accurate information.
Water Chamber
Distilled or demineralized water, required for CPAP use, is becoming easier to find in many countries and even on cruise ships.
However, if you know in advance that you will not have access to this type of water during your trip, you can safely use bottled water. Just make sure to thoroughly clean your water chamber the next morning to remove any mineral deposits that may have accumulated overnight.
You may also want to replace your aluminum water chamber with a stainless steel one, which is easier to clean and disinfect, helping to maintain optimal hygiene.
Battery
You can now travel light and without electricity with a CPAP device. Some models weigh less than a pound and can run on long-lasting batteries or regular power. Contact the Respiratory Health Clinic for more information!
There is no longer any reason to leave your CPAP device at home! Your health depends on it.
