Respiratory therapists often work behind the scenes in healthcare! It is a relatively young profession (established in 1969) compared to other medical fields, and there are only about 4,000 of us in Quebec.
Respiratory therapists must hold a practice permit and be members of the Ordre des inhalothérapeutes du Québec (OPIQ), whose mission is to protect the public.
They assess cardiorespiratory conditions for diagnosis or treatment follow-up, assist anesthesiologists during surgical procedures, and treat disorders affecting the cardiorespiratory system.
Where You Might Encounter a Respiratory Therapist

- In trauma rooms
- In pulmonary function testing labs
- In operating rooms
- In home care services

In short, our profession is diverse, dynamic, and often underrecognized!
