Also known as Gélineau’s disease, narcolepsy-cataplexy is a rare sleep disorder. People who suffer from it can fall asleep multiple times throughout the day, often suddenly and uncontrollably. This drowsiness can also be accompanied by a loss of muscle tone, known as cataplexy.
Symptoms
- Severe and excessive daytime sleepiness
- Sudden episodes of muscle weakness
- Hallucinations before or after sleep
- Sleep paralysis
Causes
- Genetic predisposition

Diagnosis and Treatment
The diagnosis is made in our sleep laboratory using a Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT). During the test, you will be asked to take four or five naps at predetermined times and intervals throughout the day. Our respiratory therapist will monitor your brain waves with an electroencephalogram (EEG) while you sleep.
