Test Epworth

Un test Epworth mesure le niveau général de somnolence diurne au moyen de questions simples, mais non scientifiques. Ce test indique si une évaluation approfondie est justifiée afin de pouvoir diagnostiquer un trouble du sommeil.

Stress and Weight Gain

Is there a link between stress and weight gain?

Chronic stress can indeed have a direct impact on weight gain.

There is also a strong connection between sleep apnea—a physical stressor on the body—and weight gain. The relationship can become a vicious cycle: excess weight can worsen sleep apnea symptoms by compressing the airways, which in turn can lead to further weight gain. Diagnosing and treating sleep apnea is crucial to preventing these complications and promoting better overall health.

What is cortisol?

Cortisol is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands. It plays a key role in regulating blood sugar levels and releasing stored sugar when the body requires more energy. Cortisol converts fat into sugar, providing natural energy to the body.

Why does stress cause weight gain?

In response to stress, the body enters survival mode, disrupting normal functions. It first releases adrenaline, also known as the “warrior hormone,” to heighten alertness. Then, cortisol takes over to supply the energy needed to cope with stress.

Normally, when the stressful situation ends, these mechanisms shut down. However, in cases of chronic stress, adrenaline and cortisol stay active, continuously providing energy. One of cortisol’s effects is that it increases appetite, especially for high-carb and fatty foods. As cortisol production rises, people tend to overeat and store excess calories as fat, leading to weight gain.

How to prevent weight gain?

Being stressed does not necessarily mean gaining weight. Many factors contribute to weight fluctuations. While there is no miracle solution, learning to manage stress can help reduce its negative effects on the body.

Here are some tips to help lower stress levels:

  • Practice relaxation techniques such as meditation or yoga.
  • Delegate tasks—you won’t manage everything alone.
  • Eat well—avoid alcohol, unhealthy fats, and caffeine, and prioritize fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
  • Talk about your problems with loved ones or consult a professional.
  • Maintain a work-life balance and avoid guilt when dedicating time to either.
  • Get good quality sleep, as it is essential to well-being.
  • Engage in regular physical activity, as movement is key for your body.
