Sleep Apnea and CPAP Treatment
In Québec, 1 in 20 people is diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). This condition is caused by the collapse of soft tissues in the throat, blocking the airways.
If you have sleep apnea, a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) device may be prescribed. At first, it may seem impossible to imagine sleeping soundly with your new device. However, with time and persistence, you will adjust!
Be Consistent
Wearing your CPAP every night is key to success! Even if you can’t wear it for the entire night at first, it is important to use it every time you go to bed—yes, even for naps! This will help you adjust more quickly and develop good compliance with your treatment.
To ease the transition, it is recommended to wear your CPAP for 10 to 15 minutes before bedtime while reading or watching TV. This can help reduce anxiety and make the device feel more natural, allowing you to fall asleep more easily when fatigue sets in.
Optimize Your Comfort
Wearing a CPAP mask and having air pressure pushed into your airways can feel uncomfortable at first. Ensuring that your mask fits properly is crucial for sleeping more comfortably.
If you experience persistent leaks, redness, or skin irritation caused by the mask, contact your respiratory therapist as soon as possible. These discomforts can interfere with your adjustment to the device and may even lead to resistance toward using it. Addressing these issues early will help you stay on track with your treatment.
Be Patient
Give yourself time! Everyone adjusts differently—some people adapt after the first night, while others take longer.
To make the process easier, celebrate small victories and focus on the benefits your CPAP provides. Instead of thinking, “I barely wore my device last night,” say, “I managed to wear it for an hour.” Recognizing positive changes, such as fewer night awakenings, easier mornings, and fewer headaches, can help motivate you to keep using your CPAP.
Be patient with yourself and accept that the adaptation period may take longer than expected.
