There are three categories of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machines available on the market to treat sleep apnea.
The first is the fixed-pressure CPAP. This type of machine is set to a predetermined pressure prescribed by a doctor. It may include a ramp feature, which starts at a lower pressure to help you fall asleep more comfortably. Once the ramp period ends, the pressure remains constant throughout the night.
Example: Prescribed pressure of 10 cmH₂O
The second category is the automatic pressure CPAP, or Auto-CPAP. This machine operates within a set pressure range, automatically adjusting to provide the optimal pressure needed at any given time during the night.
Example: Auto-CPAP 8-14 cmH₂O
The last category refers to bi-level pressure devices, commonly known as BiPAP or Bilevel. These machines are typically used for complex cases of sleep apnea or other medical conditions, such as neurological syndromes. Unlike the previous types, these devices provide two levels of pressure—one for inhalation and one for exhalation. Only a small percentage of cases require this type of machine.
