It is a relatively young profession (established in 1969) compared to other medical fields, and there are only about 4,000 of us in Quebec.<\/p><p>Respiratory therapists must hold a practice permit and be members of the Ordre des inhaloth\u00e9rapeutes du Qu\u00e9bec (OPIQ), whose mission is to protect the public.<\/p><p>They assess cardiorespiratory conditions for diagnosis or treatment follow-up, assist anesthesiologists during surgical procedures, and treat disorders affecting the cardiorespiratory system.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where You Might Encounter a Respiratory Therapist<\/h3><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>In emergency medicine or intensive care units<\/li>\n\n<li>In trauma rooms<\/li>\n\n<li>In pulmonary function testing labs<\/li>\n\n<li>In operating rooms<\/li>\n\n<li>In home care services<\/li>\n\n<li>In respiratory education and rehabilitation clinics<\/li>\n\n<li>In sleep clinics<\/li><\/ul><p>In short, our profession is diverse, dynamic, and often underrecognized!<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Respiratory therapists often work behind the scenes in healthcare!
